After falling in love with a man of much lesser status, her older brother forbade them from seeing each other and sent Alice away to keep them apart. After her death, it is said that her brother took his sister’s engagement ring and threw it into the nearby marsh, causing her soul to wander the inlet restlessly, searching for the ring, a precious memento of her love.
The Gray Man of Pawleys Island
